Ch. 10: Dip Switches

Burning Grain 101

Chapter 10: Dip Switches

Note:This chapter discusses the dip switch settings for the most recent version of the PC-45 circuit board. Setting the dip switches on older PC-45 circuit boards to the settings described in this chapter will not have the desired effect.

We have worked extensively with Harman to fine tune the PC-45 to burn the unmarketable grain grown in Western Canada. As we worked to get the stove to burn these unmarketable grains, we came up with a number of adjustments that would enable the stove to burn grain better.
These adjustments can be implemented by flipping dip switches 3,4,7 and 8 to on. Your dealer should set these dip switches on the circuit board before you buy the stove, so in a perfect world you should never have to worry about adjusting these switches. However, we are going to take a little time to explain how some of these dip switch settings affect the stove’s operation because in order to burn certain grains efficiently, a further adjustment may be needed.

In general,
you should keep the 3,4,7 and 8 dip switches on as these settings will work best for most grains. However, if you are trying to burn oats, you may want to experiment flipping switch 1, which will increase the maximum feed rate to 15 seconds out of the 15 second cycle. When switch 4 is on and 1 is off, the maximum is 6 seconds out of the 15 second cycle, which works best for most grains. However, when you are trying to burn oats or any other fast burning grain, you may need to feed the grain faster. Since these grains produce so much heat and ash, we recommend that you mix them with tougher grains that are harder to burn, rather than switching dip switch one to feed the grain faster and burn these grains straight. Doing so will reduce how often you will have to reload the hopper and will enable you to burn some of your tougher grain.
