Ch. 5: Grain Burning Summary

Burning Grain 101

Chapter Five: Summary of Grain Burning

If the stove is running properly you should see steam/smoke being driven out of the grain within two inches after entering the firebox.
After two inches you should see the grain starting to burn in a “V” shape. The grain should continue to burn as it is pushed along the burn pot and mixed by the stir stick, but it should have finished burning when it is within two to three inches of the end of the burn pot.

All you need to do to burn grain effectively is to adjust the stove so grain burns as we just described. In order to get the grain to burn as we described, there are really only of few
things you can do to affect how the grain actually burns. The first is that you can alter how much grain is being fed into the burn pot. This is accomplished by setting the feed rate. The second thing you can do is alter the amount of air the combustion fan is feeding the fire. The more oxygen reaching the flame, the hotter the fire will burn. Finally, you can alter the composition and layout of the burn pot by using the burn cap or by placing bricks around the burn pot to reflect the heat back toward the fire. In the following sections we will more fully explain how the settings affect these three variables and how you can use the settings to get your grain fire burning efficiently.
