Ch. 7: Setting the Feed Rate Adjuster

Burning Grain 101

Chapter Seven: Setting the Feed Rate Adjuster

The key to setting the feed adjuster is finding the maximum amount of a certain batch of grain that can be fed into the stove without smothering the fire. This is done by simply increasing the feed adjuster until you start to see burning coals within 2-3 inches of the end of the burn pot. As we explained in the burning process section, if you see burning coals in the last 2-3 inches of the burn-pot, the grain is feeding too fast and the stove will eventually go out. Once you see the burning coals too close to the end of the burn pot, simply turn the feed adjuster down a little and you will have the right setting. As stated above, this setting will act as a governor and will not allow the auger to feed the fuel faster than the stove can handle.

To help you begin setting the feed adjuster, we will give you ball-park settings for certain types of grain. For wheat, the “Feed Rate Adjuster” setting should be somewhere around 2.8 or 2.9. For barley, the setting should be around 3.5 and for oats it should be around 4.5. Again, these are just ballpark figures and the precise setting will vary depending on the moisture content of the grain.

At this point you set the bottom right control on the panel to either room or stove temperature. Switching the control to “Room Temperature” allows you to use the thermostat to adjust the burn rate according to the room temperature. If you select “Room Temperature” and set the thermostat to 70º, the fuzzy logic processor in the PC-45 will adjust the feed rate (up to the maximum you set with the “Feed Rate Adjuster”), the combustion fan and other variables to obtain the desired temperature.
